CPSA Chapter Display is ready for Nationals in Dallas!

Thank you to everyone who contributed an original 3 x 3 inch drawing for our chapter display at the National Convention in Dallas next week! I put the pieces together yesterday after a trip to Dick Blick's for supplies, and made the top banner today. The most important requirement (after getting all of these wonderful miniatures) is that it fit inside my suitcase. The banner will have to be re-attached when I get to Dallas. I still have to create a stand for the back so that it will stay upright on the display table. I'm excited that our chapter will have a contribution to the Hospitality Suite. I'm also going to type up a "key" that will read from top to bottom, left to right, with each artist's name and contribution.

(I hope the handwritten banner looks okay to everyone? I thought about doing something on the computer, but felt it might be more personal to do it this way. Anyone want me to change it?)

Upcoming Show Opportunities

There are two upcoming possibilities for showing your art.
• “Arts in Common” October 1st, 2011 Westborough, MA. A local frame/art shop called the Art and Frame Emporium will be hosting an art show during the event. It will be located in a large indoor area and will be monitored by the owner of the Emporium. I am willing to be the point person for delivery of the art to the show and picking it up after (provided they can all fit into my PT or, if it’s not raining, a pick-up truck). The owner is willing to group us together and I think it would be a great opportunity to show off what colored pencil is all about. The deadline for submissions is August 24th. Any paintings in the group should have colored pencil in them, but do not necessarily have to be 100%; I like people to see the versatility of the medium. It is a great opportunity for anyone novice to pro.

• The Storefront Gallery: We have an opportunity in September 2011 to have a 2-3 week show at the above mentioned store. I will be the point person again. This show is also for any level of experience. Deadline: August 24th also.Any questions or for an application contact me at: lbebick@verizon.net

Next Meeting April 23rd

Our next meeting will be on April 23rd at the Museum of Russian Icons, 203 Union Street, Clinton, MA. We will start with a brown bag lunch meeting from 11-12, then tour the museum. Bring your icon painting (see the March newsletter for details) or any other art you want critiqued. RSVP to lbebick@verison.net.

Collage deadline extended

The deadline for the 3x3 submissions for our chapter collage has been extended. We have about 14 panels so far and could use a few more. Anyone want to do a second or a third one? Anyone not done one? See the January 5th post for details.

March 5th Meeting at the Wellesley Free Library

NESBA ( The New England Society of Botanical Artists) has graciously invited us to their meeting, also at the library , where Dr. Kristen Bomblies will give a talk titled: "Illustration and Science: Keeping Art Alive." The lecture begins at 10:30 AM with refreshments/mingling to follow. Stick around for our own Deborah Friedman's and Kendra Ferreira's cp exhibit entitled Rock/Candy. Rodger Williams Botanical Garden Sketching Trip February 13th 12 PM

Need a cure for the winter doldrums? Come sketch at the largest indoor garden in New England, located in Rodger Williams Park in Providence RI. We will meet at noon just inside the front doors. Sketch to your hearts content among mini tropical forests, waterfalls, and beautiful flowers. Cost for admission is 3 dollars. Address: 1 Floral Avenue, Providence, RI 02905. NEXT MEETING JANUARY 15th

The next meeting will be at the Auburn Library, 369 Southbridge Street, Auburn, MA 01501 from 10Am to 12:45 PM. There will be a short meeting and a sketching exercise. It will consist of a "Crazy Round Robin." A still life will be set-up and participants will have 10-15 minutes to do a value drawing (this is to get the slow pokes like me! to work faster). You will then pass the drawing to the person on your left and work on your new drawing for the alloted time. We will continue this until we run out of time or you get your original back. We will leave time for everyone to enjoy the creations! To furthur challenge you. You can only bring thee values, a light, meduim and dark of one color. So no excuses about having to drag all your pencils! I call blue! RSVP to lbebick@verizon.net. Anyone interested in doing lunch afterwards is welcome.

Artwork Collage project for CPSA National Convention 2011

The National CPSA Convention is this July in Dallas, Texas. This year our chapter is going to submit a collage of our artwork for display in the hospitality room during the convention. We haven't done this in a couple of years, and it will be great to be included again and get some visibility for Chapter 112! Here's what our chapter members need to do: create a 3" x 3" image of something representative of your state or region with, of course, colored pencil! We are comprised of 8 (? is this correct) states , including the six New England States and New York and New Jersey. There is bound to be some overlap, but we don't want 20 or more images of lobsters - so let's leave that one out! Think about a bird, flower, tree, landscape, covered bridge, leaf, product, person. . . .. . whatever you think of will be great! Then execute it on some sturdy paper or board measuring exactly 3" x 3". We're going to put them together into a collage representing our chapter and have a "crazy quilt" like display. If you have any questions about this please contact me via email. I'll be most happy to try and help you. ALSO, could you please contact me and let me know what you'll be drawing. I need to keep track of how many images we'll have and what your subject matter is! Start working! We need to get the images by the middle of March, so that's almost two and a half months. DESCRIPTION: Cristi Winona, owner and operator of the Cafe, will direct the workshop in her studio/gallery in a wonderfully refurbished old mill building. Participants will hand make either a
5.5 X 5.5 or 5.5 X *.5 sketchbook from sketch paper ( sketch paper is provided, you are welcome to bring other paper if you wish) and decorative papers for the covers. The book will contain 144 sides/pages when complete.

Sharon Art Center trip: October 16th

Art Work for Post Card

We need art work for inclusion on a postcard which will be used as promotional material for the chapter. Send jpegs with your name and title of the artwork to lbebick@verizon.net. Deadline December 1st. You must be a member of DC 112 to submit.

Masthead Contest: Deadline Nov. 1st

We are looking for a new design for the masthead of our chapter newsletter.
1) The masthead should reflect the color pencil medium and be your original design, no copyrighted material maybe incorporated.

2) The chapter logo (email lbebick@verizon.net for a jpeg of the logo) and the name Pencil Pusher needs to be part of the design.

3)The overall shape should fit into the header on the first page of the newsletter.

Submit jpegs to lbebick@verizon.net. All entrants must be members of DC 112. Deadline is November 1st. All entrants will be printed in the December newsletter as well as on the blog and the winner will be determined by popular vote via the blog. The winner will receive a gift card to Utrecht.
